How to make a GIF from a video on a Mac, and keep it small

How to make a GIF from a video on your Mac: the length, size and frame rate that keep it small, the built-in routes, and when a short MP4 is better.

The short answer

To make a GIF from a video, choose two to six seconds that loop well, scale them to the width they will be shown at, use 10 to 15 frames a second, and export an animated GIF. On a Mac, the Shortcuts app's Make GIF action handles quick ones. In Sharpy you mark In and Out on the moment and export it with a name ending in .gif: it builds the colours from your clip, keeps every frame's timing exact and works entirely on your Mac.

What are the limits of a GIF?

GIF is a picture format from 1987 that learned to animate in 1989, and it shows. Before you convert video to GIF, know what the format cannot do:

Limit What it means What to do
256 colours per frame Skin, sky and gradients band or speckle Choose shots with simple, flat colour
No sound Speech and music are lost Put the words on the picture, or use a video
Timing in hundredths of a second 15 or 30 frames a second cannot be exact on every frame Use 10, 20 or 25 frames a second, or let the timing even out
Each frame compressed largely on its own Size grows with every pixel and every frame Keep it short, small and slow

The cost of that last row is real. In Google's web.dev guide, a 3.7 MB GIF became a 551 KB MP4, about a seventh of the size, and a 341 KB WebM.

How long and how big should a GIF be?

Short and small. These keep a GIF to a few megabytes or less:

  • Two to six seconds. One action, one reaction, one step of a tutorial.
  • 480 to 640 pixels wide for chat and the web, where a GIF is rarely shown larger.
  • 10 to 15 frames a second. Motion still reads, with a half to a third of the frames of a 30-frame clip.
  • A clean loop. End on a frame close to the first, so the jump back goes unnoticed.
  • Steady, simple shots. A still camera and a plain background leave the colours for the subject; noise and shake cost colours and size.
Two friends on a sofa in the evening lean together, laughing at a short looping clip on a phone she holds between them.
A GIF plays without sound and loops, so the moment has to read in silence and flow back into its own start.

How do you turn a video into a GIF on a Mac?

Not with QuickTime Player: its Export As menu offers 4K, 1080p, 720p, 480p and audio only. The routes are elsewhere:

  1. Shortcuts. The Shortcuts app has a Make GIF action, which Apple's guide shows turning photos into an animated GIF, and iDownloadBlog's guide shows Apple's gallery shortcut doing the same from a video on the Mac. It is quick, with little say over size, timing or colours.
  2. Keynote. File ▸ Export To ▸ Animated GIF turns slides into a GIF, with a choice of resolution and frame rate. It suits animated slides better than footage.
  3. A free app. Gifski, free on the Mac App Store, converts video to GIF with control over width, height, looping and frame rate up to 50 a second.

Can iMovie create GIFs?

No, not directly. iMovie on the Mac shares a project as a movie file, by email, or as a still image (one frame as a JPEG), and Apple's guide to exporting a file lists no GIF format. Export the clip from iMovie as a movie, then convert it with Shortcuts or another app.

How do you make a GIF from a video in Sharpy?

Mark the moment, decide its size, and export it with a .gif name. Sharpy chooses the kind of file from its name, so the same edit makes a movie, a GIF or the sound alone.

  1. Open the video in Sharpy, or the edit it belongs to.
  2. Mark In and Out. Press I at the start of the moment and O at the end, then loop it (⌘L with the Final Cut keys) to see whether the end flows back into the start.
  3. Decide the finished piece. File ▸ Decide the Finished Piece… sets the shape and size: square, 9:16, or any ratio with a small long edge, such as 640.
  4. Put the words on the picture if the line matters. A GIF has no sound, and Sharpy's captions are drawn into the frames.
  5. Export only between In and Out, and end the file name with .gif.

The GIF uses one set of colours measured from the clip itself, dithered so gradients hold together, and black stays pure black. Each frame's timing is kept to the hundredth of a second: measured on the file, a two-second GIF at 15 frames a second has 30 frames whose delays add up to exactly 2.00 seconds, so it never drifts faster or slower than the moment it came from. The render is checked like any other, reading the GIF frame by frame as a player shows it. Marking In and Out works the same way when you trim a video.

When is a short MP4 better than a GIF?

More often than people expect. Use a video when:

  • Sound matters.
  • It runs longer than about six seconds, where a GIF's size runs away.
  • It is rich in colour, like skin, sky or a sunset, which 256 colours band.
  • It goes on a web page. A muted, looping video that plays by itself behaves like a GIF at a fraction of the size; web.dev recommends exactly that swap.

Keep GIF for where only a GIF works: some chat apps, email, documentation, and anywhere that will not play a video by itself. In Sharpy the MP4 is the same stretch with a different name: export it as .mp4 at a small size, and compress it as far as it needs to go. How to export a video covers the rest of the export panel.

Frequently asked questions

01

How do you make a GIF from an existing video?

Trim it to a few seconds, scale it to 480 to 640 pixels wide, set 10 to 15 frames a second and export it as an animated GIF. On a Mac, Shortcuts, a free app such as Gifski and Sharpy, which exports any marked stretch as a GIF, all do it.

02

How can I convert a video to a GIF?

Use a converter that lets you set the length, the width and the frame rate, because those three decide the file size. The Shortcuts app's Make GIF action is the quickest built-in route on a Mac.

03

How do you turn a video into a GIF on Apple devices?

With the Shortcuts app and its Make GIF action, or an app that converts video to GIF. QuickTime Player and iMovie do not export GIFs.

04

Can a GIF have sound?

No. The format holds pictures only, so anything said has to be on screen as words, or the clip should be a video instead.

05

Why is my GIF so big?

Too many pixels, too many frames or too much detail. Halve the width and the file falls to about a quarter; halve the frame rate and it roughly halves again.
