Sharpy vs Final Cut Pro: two Mac editors, and one edits for you

Final Cut Pro is Apple's fast, Mac-native editor with on-device machine learning tools. Sharpy makes the whole edit itself on your Mac. A fair, dated comparison.

A video editor in headphones works on a MacBook Pro at a window table in a cafe at dusk, a camera bag and a coffee beside the laptop.

The short answer

Final Cut Pro is Apple's professional video editor: fast, Mac-native, with a magnetic timeline and on-device machine learning tools that caption, mask, search and reframe, while you make every edit. Sharpy is an agentic editor that makes the whole edit itself on your Mac, with a reason for every cut. Choose Final Cut Pro to edit by hand with Apple's tools; choose Sharpy to have the edit made for you; and use both by letting Sharpy cut and finishing in Final Cut, with the same keyboard shortcuts.

Final Cut Pro's details here were checked on 6 October 2026, against Apple's product pages, newsroom, App Store listing, release notes for version 12.4 and the Final Cut Pro user guide. The sources are listed at the end, and prices and features can change.

How do you edit in each?

In Final Cut Pro, you are the editor, on one of the fastest timelines there is. The magnetic timeline keeps clips together as you move them, and Apple's machine learning takes on single jobs: Generate Captions turns speech into closed captions or animated subtitles, Auto Mask and Magnetic Mask isolate people and objects, Transcript Search and Visual Search find moments in your media, Beat Detection lays a beat grid under your music, Smart Conform reframes for square and vertical, and Voice Isolation and Enhance Light and Color clean up sound and picture. Choosing the takes, ordering them and trimming them stays with you. On iPad, Montage Maker can cut highlights to a song; the Mac version has no automatic assembly.

In Sharpy, the editor is Sharpy. It studies a reference, builds the structure, understands every word, pause and shot, picks the best take of each line, cuts stumbles and restarts, brings dead air down to the speaker's rhythm, and adds captions, B-roll and music before rendering and checking the result. Every decision goes into an edit decision list with its reason, and you overrule what you disagree with. What an agentic video editor is explains the difference in full.

In Final Cut Pro you choose, order and trim every take yourself; Sharpy plans the order and makes the cuts, each with a reason.

Where does the AI run?

On your Mac, in both. Apple describes Final Cut Pro's newest tools, including Generate Captions, Edit Detection and Auto Mask, as on-device AI; Generate Captions downloads its language model once, and works in US English. Importing from Image Playground is the exception: Apple lists it among features that use server-side models.

Sharpy runs every model it uses on your Mac, and transcribes with two engines that vote on every word, across many languages.

What does each cost?

Final Cut Pro is $299.99 once from the Mac App Store, with updates included. It is also part of Apple Creator Studio, at $12.99 a month or $129 a year, alongside Final Cut Pro for iPad, Motion, Compressor, Logic Pro, Pixelmator Pro and MainStage, with some extra titles, transitions and other content for subscribers.

Sharpy is one plan with everything included: $20 a month or $200 a year at launch, with no credits or limits. The public price rises with every 1,000 paid members, and you keep the price you joined at.

Can you use both?

Yes, and it is a natural way to work. Let Sharpy make the edit, export it as FCPXML and open it in Final Cut Pro for the finishing touches: a title sequence, a colour pass, a client's changes. If your hands know Final Cut, switch Sharpy to its Final Cut keyboard preset and the same shortcuts work in both.

Which should you choose?

Choose Final Cut Pro if you want to make every edit yourself on a fast Mac timeline, you value a one-time price or the Creator Studio bundle, or you work across Mac and iPad with Apple's other creative apps.

Choose Sharpy if you want the edit made for you with a reason for every cut, you make talking-head videos, podcasts, courses and shorts, you caption in languages other than US English, or you want a first cut good enough to finish in Final Cut.

Frequently asked questions

Can I open a Sharpy edit in Final Cut Pro?

Yes. Sharpy exports FCPXML, Final Cut Pro's own interchange format, so the edit opens as a Final Cut project you can keep working on.
