Sharpy vs Premiere Pro: an agentic editor or a professional timeline?

Premiere Pro, now Adobe Premiere, is a professional timeline with AI tools. Sharpy makes the whole edit itself on your Mac. A fair, dated comparison.

The short answer

Premiere Pro, renamed Adobe Premiere in January 2026, is a professional timeline editor: you make every edit yourself, helped by AI tools that transcribe, find filler words and pauses, clean up speech and reframe, many of them on your own computer. Sharpy is an agentic editor: it makes the whole edit itself on your Mac and gives the reason for every cut. Choose Premiere for complete manual control, Windows and Adobe's wider toolset; choose Sharpy to have talking-head, podcast and short-form edits made for you, and finish them in Premiere when you want to.

Premiere's details here were checked on 6 October 2026, against Adobe's plans, help pages and release notes for version 26.5. The sources are listed at the end, and prices and features can change.

How do you edit in each?

Premiere is a professional timeline, and you are the editor. Every cut, trim and layer is yours, across as many video and audio tracks as the job needs. Its AI tools take on single jobs: Speech to Text transcribes your footage; Text-Based Editing lets you cut and rearrange the transcript and trims the timeline to match; filler words and pauses can be found and deleted in bulk; Enhance Speech cleans up dialogue; Auto Reframe changes the shape of a sequence; Scene Edit Detection finds the cuts in a file; and Paper Edit, new in version 26.5, builds a sequence from transcript lines you choose.

The release version of Premiere has no feature that assembles an edit by itself. An AI Assistant that can build a stringout or a first cut has been in public beta since June 2026, in the separate Premiere (beta) app, and Adobe's own guidance is that it is not yet recommended for client work.

In Sharpy, the editor is Sharpy. It studies a reference, builds the structure, understands every word, pause and shot, plans every beat, then cuts, renders and checks the result. Every decision goes into an edit decision list with its reason, so your job is to review and overrule rather than to build. What an agentic video editor is explains the difference in full.

Where does the AI run?

Premiere does a lot on your computer. Speech to Text runs on the device and works offline once its language pack is installed, Enhance Speech runs on the device, and Adobe says media intelligence search analyses and searches locally. The generative features run in Adobe's cloud: Generative Extend, the Generative Media Tool and caption translation, which uses Google Translate and Microsoft Translator. Activating Premiere needs an internet connection and an Adobe ID.

Sharpy does everything on your Mac. Its models download once, and from then on understanding, cutting, captions, translation and rendering happen on the machine. Editing with AI without uploading your footage covers why that matters.

What does each cost?

Premiere on its own costs $22.99 a month on a yearly plan paid monthly, $263.88 for a year paid up front, or $34.49 month to month, and includes 25 generative credits a month. Generative Extend costs 50 to 175 credits for each second it generates, depending on resolution, so the monthly credits buy less than one second. Creative Cloud Pro, which includes Premiere with 4,000 premium credits a month, is $69.99 a month on a yearly plan.

Sharpy is one plan with everything included: $20 a month or $200 a year at launch, with no credits, because nothing runs on our servers. The public price rises with every 1,000 paid members, and you keep the price you joined at.

Can you use both?

Yes, and it is a good way to work. Let Sharpy make the edit, then hand it to Premiere as a CMX 3600 edit decision list for finishing work such as colour, complex graphics or a client's house style. Sharpy also hands edits on as FCPXML for Final Cut Pro and as OpenTimelineIO, and if your fingers know Premiere, Sharpy offers Premiere's keyboard shortcuts.

Which should you choose?

Choose Premiere if you want frame-by-frame control over a multi-track timeline, you work on Windows, you rely on Adobe's other apps and generative tools, or you cut long-form, documentary or broadcast work where every decision is a craft decision.

Choose Sharpy if you make talking-head videos, podcasts, courses, YouTube videos or shorts on a Mac with Apple silicon, you want the edit made for you with a reason for every cut, your footage has to stay on your machine, or you want to direct the edit from Claude or Codex.

Frequently asked questions

01

Is Premiere Pro now called Adobe Premiere?

Yes. Adobe renamed Premiere Pro to Adobe Premiere with version 26.0, in January 2026. It is the same professional editor.

02

Can Premiere Pro edit a video automatically?

Not in the release version. Paper Edit builds a sequence from transcript lines you choose, and the AI tools each do one job. An AI Assistant that can assemble a stringout or first cut is in public beta in a separate app, and Adobe does not yet recommend it for client work.

03

Does Premiere Pro need an internet connection?

To activate, yes. Speech to Text and Enhance Speech then work on your computer, while Generative Extend, caption translation and generated media need Adobe's cloud.

04

Can I finish a Sharpy edit in Premiere?

Yes. Sharpy exports a CMX 3600 edit decision list, which Premiere imports, so you can let Sharpy make the edit and finish it on Premiere's timeline.

05

Which is cheaper?

Premiere on its own is $22.99 a month on a yearly plan, with 25 generative credits. Sharpy is $20 a month at launch, with no credits or limits.
