Sharpy vs Screen Studio: a screen recorder or a whole editor?
Screen Studio makes polished screen recordings with automatic zooms. Sharpy edits the whole video on your Mac, recorder included. A fair, dated comparison.

The short answer
Screen Studio is a Mac screen recorder that makes recordings look polished automatically: zooms on your clicks, a smooth cursor, backgrounds and camera layouts, with a light editor on top. Sharpy is an agentic video editor for any footage, with a screen recorder built in: it records, chooses zooms by what you click and say, and edits the whole video itself, talking-head and screen together. Choose Screen Studio for beautiful product demos and tutorials on their own; choose Sharpy when the recording is one part of a video you want edited for you.

What does each do best?
Screen Studio is the specialist in good-looking screen recordings. Record a display, a window or an area with your webcam, microphone and system audio, and it adds zooms where you click, smooths the cursor, adds motion blur and puts the recording on a background of your choice. Camera layouts switch between full screen, split screen and an overlay, and its camera cutout separates you from your room. Version 4.0 added editing by transcript, filler-word removal and pause tightening. It also records an iPhone or iPad over USB, inside a device frame.
Sharpy is the editor, and the recording is one input. It records the screen at its native resolution with system audio, your microphone and your camera through Continuity Camera, and it keeps a log of every move, click and key on the same clock. From that log it chooses zooms by meaning, redraws the cursor exactly, hides passwords and keys automatically, and cuts the dead time where nothing happens. Then it edits the result like any other footage: it picks the best takes of what you said, cuts stumbles and dead air, adds captions and chapters, and renders every shape you need, 9:16 and 4:5 included, from the one recording.

Where does the work happen?
Screen Studio does most of its AI on your Mac, including transcription, noise reduction, face tracking and the camera cutout. Cloud transcription and AI voiceover are optional and send audio or text out, and shareable links are stored online, through Cloudflare according to its privacy policy.
Sharpy does everything on your Mac. Your recordings, transcripts and projects stay there. Editing with AI without uploading your footage covers why that matters.
What does each cost?
Screen Studio is sold by subscription to new buyers: $9 a month billed yearly, or $29 month to month, with every feature in both and 40% off for students and educators. Without an active plan everything works except exporting. Older one-time licences still work and can be renewed for updates.
Sharpy is one plan with everything included, the recorder and the whole editor: $20 a month or $200 a year at launch, with no credits or limits. The public price rises with every 1,000 paid members, and you keep the price you joined at.
Can you use both?
Yes. If you love Screen Studio's look, record there and bring the export into Sharpy, which edits it together with your camera footage and voiceover: the best takes, the cuts, captions, chapters and music. If you would rather keep it all in one place, Sharpy's own recorder does the recording too.
Which should you choose?
Choose Screen Studio if you make product demos, onboarding videos and tutorials that are mostly screen, you want backgrounds and device mockups, and you are happy editing them yourself.
Choose Sharpy if your videos mix screen and camera, you want the whole video edited for you with a reason for every cut, you need every shape from one recording, or you want everything to stay on your Mac.
Frequently asked questions
01Is Sharpy a Screen Studio alternative?
For recording and editing tutorials and demos on a Mac, yes. Screen Studio is the stronger choice for the look of a recording on its own; Sharpy is the one that edits the whole video, screen and camera together.
02Does Screen Studio edit talking-head videos?
It records your camera alongside the screen, with layouts, face tracking and a camera cutout, and version 4.0 added transcript editing and filler-word removal. It is built around its own screen recordings rather than general footage: it imports MP4 files, and merging several recordings into one project is still on its roadmap.
03How much does Screen Studio cost?
$9 a month billed yearly, or $29 month to month, for new buyers. You can record and edit without a plan, but exporting needs one.
04Does Sharpy's recorder zoom automatically?
Yes, and it chooses each zoom by meaning: the control you clicked, the field you are typing in, or the words you are saying matched to the text on screen. The cursor is redrawn from a log of every click, so it never lags.
